Overberg Education District Holiday Programme
4 May 2023
Safe Schools officials in the Overberg Education District facilitated a holiday programme during the April school break.
Learners from Gansbaai Primary School and Masakhane Primary School attended sessions organised by Safe Schools in collaboration with various stakeholders, including Cape Nature, Overstrand Municipality Fire & Rescue, Overstrand Law enforcement K9 Unit, Badisa Gansbaai, Dyer Island Conservation Trust, Gansbaai SAPS, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport and the district’s school enrichment component.
The children learned about school safety, fire safety, anti-bullying, and about biodiversity and nature conservation. They were also taught about the history and development of the nature reserve in Gansbaai. Different sport codes were on offer to give learners an opportunity to get some exercise.
The learners particularly enjoyed the K9 Unit’s presentation on what their job entails as well as the historical tour of Klipgat Cave in the Walker Bay Nature Reserve.
A highlight for learners from Ouplaas Primary School was a beach clean-up session at Koppie Alleen in the De Hoop Nature Reserve. The clean-up was organised by Safe Schools in collaboration with Cape Nature.
