Minister Maynier opens Educare Centre in Ysterplaat
14 September 2022
On Saturday 3 September, Minister David Maynier officially opened the National War Memorial Health Foundation’s Ysterplaat Educare Centre.
The Foundation now has four creches/pre-schools in the Cape Peninsula, catering for children aged 6 months to 6 years, five days a week.
The Minister officially opened the Ysterplaat centre with the help of the Foundation’s longest serving member, Mr Angus Bean. The Minister recognised the importance of the centre and the Early Childhood Development sector, saying:
“Our ECD practitioners are really a tremendous resource to our children and to our Department. There is a clear warmth and generosity of spirit that they exude, and our children respond to it. So I want to say a heartfelt thank you to our practitioners and teachers at ECD centres.”
The event also celebrated the contribution that the Foundation has made to the ECD sector for the past 76 years. They opened their first centre in 1947. And their first creche in 1950. Hundreds of children have benefitted over the years.
Foundation Chairperson, Izak Mahali, said:
“Despite the dire economic circumstances and financial constraints, we managed to continue providing this very essential service to the most vulnerable and valued in society, our children. The Foundation remains financially sustainable through efficient financial management principles and administration, the implementation of accountable financial systems and good corporate governance. The Foundation consistently had clean audit outcomes during its years of existence.”
