Sharkies take a stand against bullying

Learner leaders at Gansbaai Academia made a short video to honour Lufuno Mavhunga and call for an end to bullying.
Mavhunga, a learner from Limpopo, took her own life after reportedly being bullied.
In the video, Chestiano Louw, chairperson of the school’s Representative Council of Learners (RCL), acknowledged that bullying is a huge problem and that it must stop. The message from the school’s RCL members was clear: bullying is wrong, and learners will not condone such behaviour.
The video is part of Youth Month activities in the Overberg Education District. RCLs have been challenged to be creative and submit short videos, posters and pictures focusing on anti-bullying, school pride and patriotism and school values.
Kobus Mike, School Management and Governance Officer in the Overberg Education District, said that RCLs and other learner leaders in schools can contribute and play a crucial role in raising awareness around the scourge of bullying, instilling school pride and promoting positive values in schools and in communities. During youth month the contributions submitted by the RCLs will be shared with all schools on the districts’ official and social media platforms as well as with partners in the community.
“As a district we’re really looking forward to seeing what our learners can create and are capable of and hope that this will result in our learner leadership becoming more confident in taking on more social issues during the rest of the year.”
