Therapists provide a treasure trove of activities to help children thrive
30 July 2020
Therapists have been collaborating to provide parents and caregivers with fun, practical activities to do with children at home.
The Western Cape Education Department: Therapeutic Services group on Facebook showcase the work done by occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists and audiologists.
The activities are aimed at teaching children basic concepts, develop coordination, help with bilateral integration, midline crossing and strengthen muscles. Through play, children can also develop fine and gross motor skills, auditory skills, visual perception and self-care skills.
Patricia Arendse, Provincial Manager for Therapy Services in the WCED, said the activities and resources are also sought after by teachers.
In the latest video, initiated by Yumna Razak, therapists challenged themselves to get creative with activities using a ball. After showing various activities, they passed the ball to viewers to have fun with their children at home.

The Facebook group started in 2017 and proved to be an invaluable resource during the national lockdown. The administrators are Patricia Arendse, Lizl Davis, Warda Conrad, Ezette Fourie, Lindi Gericke and Gouwa Ebrahim.
