Wupperthal school reopens after
tragic fire

Learners in Wupperthal started the 2019 academic year on 21 January after a devastating fire destroyed the school hostel.

The blaze swept through the Cederberg town on 30 December, destroying 53 houses and five businesses.
The majority of the learners stay in the hostel and the Western Cape Education Department decided to delay the opening of the school to arrange alternative accommodation and emergency transport.
The generous donations from the wider community are much appreciated. There has been overwhelming goodwill from many people, particularly with ensuring that the learners have school uniforms. The school also received donations of clothes and learning aids for those learners whose homes had burnt down.
The WCED’s Specialised Learner and Educator Support component is providing support to learners and catch-up programmes provided.
