Western Cape’s Top Teachers
14 November 2019
On Friday, 8 November 2019, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) announced the names of the top teachers in the province.
The WCED received 247 nominations for the National Teaching Awards (NTA). The education districts, through cluster adjudication, nominated 47 cluster winners for adjudication for the provincial awards and the ten provincial winners will represent the Western Cape at the national awards.
Western Cape Education Minister Debbie Schäfer said the celebration was an opportunity to applaud and acknowledge teachers. ”We know that the vast majority of around 33 000 teachers out there are giving their best to serve the interests of every child in every classroom.”
Schäfer made reference to South Africa’s success in the Rugby World Cup and said the Springbok team displayed characteristics of heroes. “Of course, these characteristics all apply to the teachers sitting here tonight - and to thousands of your colleagues in schools across the province: strong values, determination, selflessness, competence and courage.
“We thank you for this and for everything you are doing for the youth of this country, for everything you are doing to realise our potential as a Winning Nation.”
