WCED therapists celebrate World Play Day

22 June 2023

Therapists at the Western Cape Education Department joined in the fun of World Play Day, celebrated annually on 28 May.

The theme for this year was to promote sustainability through play. Various activities were arranged at schools in the weeks before and after 28 May where learners, teachers and district officials had fun and engaged in play activities.

The Cape Winelands Education District ran a competition, #wceddropeverythingandplay, encouraging schools to make videos where teachers and learners dropped everything and played during the school day. Winelands Primary School won the competition.

Therapists in the Eden and Central Karoo Education District arranged a Play Day at Carpe Diem Special School and district officials were exposed to games and sport codes like boccia, hocker and basketball, played by learners who have physical disabilities. The day ended with a hula-hoop competition which brought lots of laughter.

The Metro East Education District therapists and learning support officials collaborated and arranged a play day for learners at Sir Lowry’s Pass Primary School.  The therapists in Overberg Education Department made a video of children of various ages playing.  This video was circulated to all schools to encourage them to create safe play spaces for learners at the school.  The team also arranged Play Days at different schools in the Overberg.

Metro Central Education District celebrated World Play Day with parents in Bonteheuwel. Recyclable materials were used to demonstrate and promote sustainable play.  One of the parents commented that it was “awesome, exiting and amazing” to see what you can do with recycled materials at home. “Thanks a lot, I had a lot of fun.”

Therapists in the Metro North Education District arranged Play Days at special schools where children had tremendous fun.

Play improves the overall well-being of children and young people. Children learn about the world and themselves, when playing and skills needed for study, work and relationships are developed.
