Recardo August, an administrative clerk at Rietenbosch Primary School in Stellenbosch, has been crowned as the first crossword champion of the Afrikaans magazine, Huisgenoot.

August won the ‘Blokraaibestes-kampioen’ title in a programme broadcast on VIA TV (DStv channel 147). An article about his achievement was published in Huisgenoot in April and he appeared on the cover of the magazine.

August’s passion for completing crosswords started when he was a teenager. He fondly recalled asking his parents to buy the Huisgenoot so that he could tackle the crossword puzzles. His dedication was rewarded with the championship title and R15 000 prize money.

Learners at his school also benefit from his hobby. They can use the many magazines he buys in search of a new crossword challenge for school projects.

Jardine Jappie, Rietenbosch Primary School Principal, said August was an excellent ambassador for the school.  “We are proud of Mr August and this great achievement. Staff members, parents and the broader school community followed the programme and was in full support of Mr August. He is very passionate about "blokkiesraaisels" and we knew he had it in him to come out on top. His love for crosswords has spilled over to staff members and learners.

“He is regarded as a celebrity at school. Parents and other visitors make mention of his great achievement when they visit the school, and we are all happy with him and his family for winning the competition.”
