WCED launch resource to support teachers in multi-grade classrooms

25 July 2019

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has launched a resource that will assist teachers who have to teach three grades simultaneously in one classroom.

The WCED Multi-grade resource consists of two files: one for the foundation phase and one for the intermediate phase. The first sets of the resource were printed in 2017 and distributed to multi-grade schools. Feedback and input were received on a regular basis.

To quality assure the process, a Multi-grade Reference Group was established.

The rural Heads: Curriculum Support, rural foundation phase and General Education and Training (GET) coordinators, as well as, one foundation phase and one intermediate phase subject adviser and teacher per district joined the writing team to assure compliance and quality.

The final layout was completed during 2018 and the final documents were printed and distributed to all multi-grade schools during 2018 for implementation in 2019.

The resource was officially launched in Mossel Bay on Friday, 19 July 2019 by Dr Peter Beets, Deputy Director General: Curriculum and Assessment Management and Haroon Mahomed, Chief Director: Curriculum Management and Teacher Development.

All the teachers that were part of this process were honoured with a certificate of appreciation at the launch.
