WCED EXCO wraps up District visits

Over the past month, the WCED Executive Committee traveled across the Province visiting schools, as well as, meeting with District teams.

The visits took the EXCO team from schools in Vredenburg up the West Coast, across the Metro regions and then to Robertson, Beaufort West and Swellendam.

Meetings with the District Directors, their Circuit Managers and Curriculum Heads also followed the school visits.

The visits focused on three foci areas:

  1. Ensuring that all schools are fully functional organisations.
  2. Ensuring quality continuous teaching in every classroom.
  3. Ensure that we have enabling governance in all schools and not disabling governance.

While quality education was taking place in many of the schools visited, there were many concerns raised when visiting some of the schools. The lack of quality teaching and basic functionality was evident. A report back was provided to the district on the observations made by the EXCO members so that support or intervention could be provided.

It was, however, exciting to see the many “Values” initiatives in our schools and how this has impacted on learner behavior and classroom practice.

The District also had the opportunity to present their intervention and support plans for the year ahead and their plans to celebrate “The Year of the Learner.”

It was a productive engagement and we thank the schools, district officials and the caterers for their wonderful hospitality.
