WCED celebrates long-serving staff

26 October 2022

The Western Education Department is recognising a total of 1 000 staff members this year for 20, 30 and 40 years of service.

One of the long-serving employees is Don Haripersad, Director: Curriculum Development: Further Education and Training (FET). Haripersad will be acknowledged for 40 years of experience in the teaching profession.

He is one of 200 educators and public service staff employees who will celebrate this milestone.

A total of 549 employees will receive awards for 30 years of service and 251 staff employees have served 20 years.

Haripersad and his team provide programme management and direct support for curriculum to subject advisers in the eight district offices that in turn provide support directly to schools. “My goal is to enhance the quality of public education particularly in improving curriculum and assessment management in schools. Emphasis is placed on improving classroom practice by enhancing pedagogical content knowledge in teachers to be more inclusive in meeting the needs of learners to ensure quality education outcomes embedded in a strong value system,” he said.

Western Cape Minister of Education, David Maynier, said the department has faced a challenging few years as the COVID-19 pandemic, and the learning losses that occurred as a result of schooling during the pandemic, continue to affect teaching and learning in the Province. “The steady hands and endless dedication of our long-serving staff members have seen us through the worst, and will no doubt see us through new challenges in the years to come.”

Head of Education, Brent Walters, said the awardees have, in some way or another, touched, helped, guided, taught, inspired and motivated many of us employed by the WCED, or the hundreds of learners who have come and gone through their hands at school. “May you all continue to enjoy, love and feel impassioned by what you do as you continue to serve in the years to come.

“Thank you for what you mean to education in this Province, to every other employee in this organisation and, of course, to every learner, in every classroom, in every school in this Province,” Walters added.
