Vaccination outreach in Khayelitsha

30 September 2021

The Metro East Education District (MEED) and the provincial Department of Health’s Eastern Substructure collaborated to promote the vaccination of Grade 12 learners who are 18 years and older.

Khayelitsha has been earmarked as an area with low vaccination rates, especially amongst the 18 to 35 age group.

The MEED task team drew up a Google form to assess the vaccination need of all schools in the district.  A few schools in Khayelitsha responded. Manyano High school in Khayelitsha indicated that 150 Grade 12 learners wanted to be vaccinated.

The Department of Health proposed a vaccination outreach pop up site at schools with more than 100 learners wanting to be vaccinated.
