Twins support each other through personal tragedy to achieve success

23 January 2020

Attendees at this year’s Matric Awards ceremony had tears in their eyes when they heard about the challenging circumstances some candidates faced while at school.

The achievements of learners in the National Senior Certificate Examinations are celebrated annually at Leeuwenhof and hosted by the Premier.

In addition to awarding the top achievers in the province, Special Ministerial Awards recognise learners who have achieved their matric pass under very challenging circumstances. Awards are also presented to candidates who achieved excellence despite barriers to learning.

One of these awards was bestowed upon twin brothers, Yaqoob and Yusuf Arrison, from Bernadino Heights High School in Scottsdene.

The brothers overcame a serious attempt on their lives by a relative two years ago, and despite the heartbreak and physical harm they suffered, they completed their matric examinations, and both received a Bachelor’s pass.

The brothers thanked the community of Kraaifontein and the school for supporting them and inspiring them through difficult times. They said they were especially grateful for their aunt for always being there for them.

Congratulations to the Arrison twins and to Bernadino Heights for supporting them. With a growth mindset, anything is possible!
