Sensational schools rugby showcase at DHL Newlands
12 March 2020
Newlands is described as the field of dreams and on Tuesday some of the top schools rugby talent had the opportunity to show what they could do at the Western Province Rugby Schools Day.
The programme was jam packed with nine matches of 40 minutes each. Entrance was free and supporters came out in their numbers to support their teams.
The rugby itself was gripping as the teams did everything to impress on their chance to play in front of a big crowd at DHL Newlands, with a large number of interested parents, old boys and schools rugby fans in attendance.
Club sides SK Walmers and Busy Bees were also in action in addition to the different schools teams, with plenty of tries being scored in the early games.
Scottsdene High held out against Gordons High, before SK Walmers got the better of Busy Bees and Milnerton managed to shut out Melkbosstrand.
A clinical performance from Durbanville saw them dominate against Brackenfell, while Stellenberg scored the only two tries in what was a tense encounter with Bellville as the light began to fade.
Boland Landbou were impressive in their 20-5 win against SACS, taking their opportunities well to deny the locals.
One of the performances of the day came from Wynberg, who scored early and late to claim a 15-10 win against Paul Roos in dramatic style, with their gathered supporters cheering on loudly.
Another well-supported team was Paarl Boys and they were suitably dominant in their 15-5 win against Rondebosch. The final match saw Paarl Gim beat Bishops 20-15. Bishops did well to score three tries of their own, but the Paarl team scored four to end the event on a high.
