Schools receive treasure box of educational activities

19 March 2021

Learners at Teslaarsdal Primary School in Theewaterskloof were the lucky recipients of Treasure Box activity packs sponsored by The Learning Trust.

The Treasure Box collaboration began as a special project borne as a direct result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Many learners from their After School programmes come from families who have limited access to internet and smart-phone devices and the Treasure Box partners collaborated to illustrate printable activity books for families with young children.

The Theewaterskloof Municipality was part of an After School Programmes Research Symposium in October 2020. All the participants received donations of Teasure Box activity packs which contained the Snorkie and Pals booklets and crayons for learners aged five to nine. The booklets are bilingual (Xhosa/English and Afrikaans/English) and can be used at home to strengthen interaction between parents and children.  The activities are intended to advance literacy, numeracy, critical thinking, sports and life skills.

The Theewaterskloof Municipality contacted local institutions that work within the After School sphere to distribute the packs  to their stakeholders.

Teslaarsdal Primary School Principal,  Reuben Talliard, said there was great excitement at the school during a visit by the local library staff to hand over the activity packs. Learners were eager to join the book’s characters, Snorkie, Chommie Walkie Talkie and Bokkie, on their adventures.

Thank you for this wonderful collaborative effort! A true #TeamRead initiative!
