Excitement is mounting at West End Primary School in Mitchells Plain ahead of the Read to Rise Book Festival at the end of this month.

Deputy Principal Althea Stander said the school is passionate about reading and writing and have been working with the festival organisers for the past ten years.

The school regularly participates and excel in reading competitions. “The learners are very excited because books with stories that they have written will be  on display and there will be poetry readings, storytelling, workshops and various other activities for the whole family.”

Read to Rise is a non-profit organisation committed to promoting youth literacy in schools in South Africa's under-resourced communities. The organisation serves learners in Grade 2 and 3 in Mitchells Plain.

The book festival will showcase local authors. It is said to be the first ever book festival on the Cape Flats.

The festival will run from 31 August to 1 September from 09:00 to 17:00 at West End Primary School, 26 Primrose Street, Lentegeur.
