Overberg Education District Celebrates its Multi-Grade Teachers and Principals!

21 November 2019

On Saturday 16 November 2019, the Overberg Education District showed its appreciation for Multi-Grade teaching at a wonderful celebration event which was well attended by Multi-Grade teachers, principals and district officials.

Helene Van Zyl, the acting District Director, gave the opening address emphasising the importance of Multi-Grade teaching and commended teachers for their hard work. This was followed by an informative presentation from Jenny Bridgeman (Head of Curriculum) on the state of Multi-grade teaching in the Overberg.

The keynote speaker, Jerry Zitha, Chief Education Specialist for Multi-Grade Teaching from the Department of Basic Education, focussed on the development of Multi-grade schools. Zitha also visited several multi-grade schools in the district to monitor the implementation of the Multi-Grade toolkit by teachers.

Reginald Jackson, Principal of Boontjieskraal Primary School, informed attendees about the context and challenges of his school and gave colleagues an inspiring message of hope. Two teachers from Okkie Smuts Primary School shared some of their best practices.

Each Multi-Grade teacher received a “starter pack” with essential stationery for 2020.

Sarine Pienaar of Jongensklip Primary School said she went to school on Monday with a song in her heart after Saturday’s treat. She said the acknowledgement from the district makes it easier to work in challenging conditions.
