National Science Week celebrations at Bishop Lavis High School

The University of Pretoria, in collaboration with the Human Science Research Council (HSRC), hosted an outreach programme at Bishop Lavis High School.
The event on 05 August 2022 formed part of National Science Week celebrations.
The week-long activities included panel discussions, storytelling for communicating science, a documentary and community outreach.
Glenda Petersen, Bishop Lavis High School’s Acting Deputy Principal, said the Physical Sciences and Life Sciences learners were captivated by the discussion on how careers in basic sciences are impacting development.
Each of the highly respected panellists approached the topic from different perspectives ranging from Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.
The panelists were Dr Saahier Parker, a Senior Manager at the HSRC Impact Centre, Dr Lerato Rametse, a clinician scientist, medical doctor and a PhD candidate in the Division of Immunology at the University of Cape Town, Memory Dizha, a Mathematics and Science teacher at Manzomthombo Secondary School in Mfuleni, and Dr Vuyo Mavumengwana, a specialist scientist at the SA Medical Research Centre.
Petersen said the school was honoured to have Professor Mokgalaka, Dr Palesa Sekhejane, Dr Konosoang Sobane and the rest of the esteemed panel speaking to the learners on career prospects in the field of sciences.
