Mindfulness and wellness in schools

Date: 5 May 2019

The Mindful Living programme in schools has reached over 900 children and 160 teachers, helping them to manage anger, depression and become more enthusiastic about their lives.

The programme was introduced by the Western Cape Education Department in September 2018 to manage stress and trauma in a more holistic way.

Elizabeth Beer of Mindful Living Yoga & Wellness Lotus Production Management said incorporating breathing exercises, guided relaxation and yoga on a daily basis can assist teachers and learners to manage their trauma and stress in healthy ways. They learn breathing techniques and mindfulness practices that assist them in their everyday lives.

Teachers and learners have reported feeling happier, less stressed and able to focus better after completing the programme.

Studies have shown that yoga and mindfulness activities at school improve the emotional health of children with anxiety.

The programme is currently running at 18 schools across the Western Cape.
