The Matrics in Antarctica initiative is back!

26 August 2021

Five South African students from across the country will be given a once in a lifetime experience, an all-expenses paid adventure to Antarctica. The students will explore this incredible landscape while learning more about the diverse ecosystem, sustainability and conservation.

Last year, Ayakha Melithafa, from the Centre of Science and Technology (COSAT) in Khayelitsha was one of five matric students from the class of 2020 who won the all-expenses-paid educational adventure in Antarctica with pioneering explorer Riaan Manser and a team from Stellenbosch University.

To enter, matrics will have to write a mini essay of 100 words answering the question “If saving the environment is a global problem - how can YOU help? What can you do in your own hometown that you believe will make a positive impact on the planet and possibly Antarctica?”.

This competition is open to all 2021 matric students in South Africa. All entries must be in by 31 October 2021 and the winners will be announced in January 2022.
