Learners learn through play at Kalkfontein Primary

31 October 2019

Curriculum staff in the Metro East Education District continued with an initiative to uplift learners and staff at Kalkfontein Primary School, thus embracing the WCED values.

The first phase of the initiative started during July, being Mandela Month, when the school was supported with food contributions from Pick’nPay (Riverside) in Kuils River, Sanlam, and the Metro East Education Office. This programme was highly successful and beneficial to all learners at the school.

The second phase of the initiative required much creativity and innovation, as well as a knack for painting. The curriculum team were responsive to the school’s need for an environment conducive to teaching and learning, and approached 17 schools within the district to pledge paint for the educational murals that were done in the Kalkfontein School hall during the recent holiday.

The team worked tirelessly to create each mural as beautifully and perfectly as possible, after receiving guidance from Winston Quickfall from QuickArt, a company that specializes in this form of educational art which creates a fun and exciting teaching and learning environment.

Allan van Niekerk, Principal of Kalkfontein Primary, expressed his gratitude for the commitment of all those involved in making the project a great success, and for sacrificing the time and effort to create the beautiful artwork. Van Niekerk and his staff are hopeful that learning through play will yield both social and academic benefits for the learners.
