Larries, Flowers and Sea Turtles

7 November 2019

La Rochelle Girls’ High School’s Green Committee has been busy during the last term of the 2019 school year.

As part of their efforts to raise funds for the support of environmental organisations, they helped to fold beautiful flower crowns for Garden Day on 20 October that were distributed all over Cape Town. Having participated in this innovative event in 2018, the Larries have also decided to use flower crowns to celebrate birthdays at school. They have banned balloons (which is single-use plastic that often ends up poisoning marine life) and have opted to “bloom” the way a true Larrie can.

The funds raised through this event and others, like the Le Naturel School Fundraiser, have helped the Larries to donate R3 000 to the Two Oceans Aquarium Turtle Rehabilitation Centre.

On Saturday, 27 October 2019, the Green Committee members visited the Aquarium to see how these Turtley Awesome animals are rehabilitated.

There are only 7 species of sea turtles in the world and all of them are endangered. They were introduced to the two Green Turtles, Bob and Alvi, who both suffered from some or other form of oceanic plastic pollution. This visit was an eye-opener to the dangers our precious marine life are in due to our human activities and to what lengths the team at the Aquarium goes to help protect and care for their animals.

The EnvironmentaLarries will continue to raise funds and awareness for the deep sea creatures!
