After 24 weeks of intense competition, Kyle Samuels, a Grade 4 learner at Aristea Primary School, emerged as the Western Cape winner of the 2020 Growsmart Competition.

For more than a decade, the Western Cape Education Department, in collaboration with Growthpoint Properties, has been dedicated to promoting the importance of Literacy and Mathematics in a way that benefits learners, schools, teachers and communities via the very popular Growsmart Educational Programme.

This year’s competition took on a new format. It was presented live and on air with Ryan O’Conner from Heart FM Afternoon Drive Time as host and quizmaster.
Kyle competed against Kayla Windvogel of Saffier Primary School in the nail-biting grand finale.

He correctly answered ten questions in 60 seconds to win the title and R20 000 towards his education. Kayla proved tough competition by scoring nine out of ten in the allotted time. She won R5 000 towards her education.

The competition was open to learners in Grades 4 – 6 and they had to answer several mathematics and language questions. Learners were required to study the free Growsmart Newspapers available on the Growsmart website: www.growsmart.org.za and WCED ePortal: https://wcedeportal.co.za/ to prepare for the daily competition. The questions were directly linked to the Intermediate Phase Languages Curriculum (CAPS).

Well done to all the learners who competed this year.
