Horizon Mathematics Competition

11 December 2020

The WCED, in collaboration with Horizon Education Trust, presented another successful Mathematics competition.

More than 27 000 learners in Grades 5-7 from across the province took part in this year’s competition. This is 17 000 more than in 2019!

Participation was free and the question papers were available in Afrikaans and English. Two rounds were conducted in which more than 246 schools participated.

The first round was administered before President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a national state of disaster in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It was however decided that the final round should continue as a larger number of learners benefit from this challenge that test their higher order thinking skills and knowledge in mathematics.

Question papers were emailed to schools and an online version was also made available. The completed scripts were collected by courier and auto marked at a central venue.

Andre Lamprecht, Curriculum Planner for Mathematics, said the significant increase in numbers from 2019 to 2020 is an indication that learners are keen to compete and excited about the great prizes up for grabs.

The top three learners were:

1st Place - Youkyum Kim, Kenridge Primary

2nd Place - Kevar Mahabeer, Edgemead Primary

3rd Place - Kayleigh Botes, Laerskool Panorama

Well done to the winners!
