Grade 4 excursion to the Schooner Tara Research Vessel
18 May 2022
The French Schooner Tara Research Vessel invited learners to join them at the Jetty in the Waterfront.
This sailing vessel is on a mission! The vessel specialises in studying oceanic microbiomes. The scientific team looks at plastic pollution in the main African rivers and study their impact on the South Atlantic Ocean.
Altena Primary School's top 30 Natural Science and Technology students were selected to join them on 25 April 2022. For many learners it was their first time on a boat. Learners were able to climb onboard where they were given an informative tour of the vessel. Thereafter, they went to The Shed and saw samples of plankton that was collected for research. The scientists were very impressed with all the questions asked and all the interest shown. The top 30 NST students were reminded that reducing pollution starts with them.
Malinda Kruger, Principal of Altena Primary School, thanked the Schooner Tara for the invitation. “We had a wonderful time and learners will remembers this outing for years to come. Maybe some will venture into Micro- or Marine biology after this.”
