George High School learners getting skilled in martial arts

22 June 2023

Practising martial arts are good for mental and physical health and learners at George High School are reaping the benefits after a parent and community worker offered to train learners for free.

George High School Principal, Rodney Cupido, said the school is particularly proud of James Olieslagter, who started training the learners at no cost.

Learners were graded on 27 May 2023. The following Grade 8 learners obtained their yellow belt: Frelicia Solomons, Wendall Stefaans, Kulthum Dollie and Anvil April.

Learners in Grade 11 who now also have a yellow belt are Eugene Swati, Nayvon Jacobs, Hayleigh Innes, Rasonita Williams, Raaziq Dollie, Jaydin Botha, Matwinn Giewelaar and Leighthan Olieslager.  Two Grade 12 learners, Waylene Jooste and Peter-John Loggenberg, also obtained a yellow belt.

Olieslagter and his team took the learners on a weekend camp from 02 to 04 June 2023 at Waboomskraal.

Besides martial arts, the camp focused on spirituality, preparation for the June exams, team building, youth development and community outreach.
