Family Numeracy: A Mind for Mathematics

23 November 2021

The Western Cape Education Department has launched a family numeracy campaign to bring mathematics home, make it real and lots of fun.

The WCED took the African proverb "It takes a village to raise a child" to heart
when they decided to develop a manual which parents can use to help develop their children's maths abilities and nurture a love for the subject.

Families receive a Mathematics booklet filled with activities and games with content such as numbers, patterns, space and shape, and measurements.

The campaign focuses on Grade 4 Mathematics and will run over a three-year period. School principals are encouraged to provided opportunities where Grade 4 teachers can engage with parents and children and demonstrate uses of the activities in the manual.

Great care was taken to make sure that the selected activities do not add a financial burden on families. Parents and caregivers can also be assured that you don’t need to be a great mathematician or to have a college degree in math to do the activities with children. Your time and interest and the pleasure that you share with your child as part of working together are what matter most.

The manual is available on the WCED ePortal at the following link: https://wcedeportal.co.za/family-numeracy

You can also watch a video about the campaign in English and Afrikaans.
