Excellence in Special Needs Teaching

Name: Mr Jevonn Cloete

School: Rusthof LSEN School, Rusthof, Strand

District: Metropole East Education District

Mr Cloete is an energetic and passionate teacher with a great love for teaching. He is passionate about every aspect of special education, which in itself is a rare find.

He is trained in the relatively new Differentiated Curriculum and Assessment, which is in its pilot phase at LSEN schools and is currently busy studying towards his Master’s degree in Mathematics Education focusing on number sense development with SID learners.

He is an ambassador for the Rapport Education Bursary Fund, a Cape Teaching and Leadership (CTLI) champion by keeping his school informed on upcoming training dates and motivating teachers to attend, globally involved with Golden Key, Utrecht University, and was part of the Hubolt University Summit.

He is also involved in numerous professional development events such as presenting at LSEN conferences, training schools in Kuilsriver and Stellenbosch on the curriculum as well as DCAPS, introduction courses in Xhosa as a Secondary Additional Language, practical application to barriers to learning language, and how to adjust planning effectively during COVID-19 to name just a few. He has attended numerous training sessions such as Makaton SA, AHA Reading Scholarship, Epilepsy, SIAS, Alternative Assessment and DCAPS Teaching and Assessment.

As a fairly young teacher, Mr Cloete serves the school and community wholeheartedly. Although he is the Foundation Phase Departmental Head, he is involved across all phases of the school and also draws up the roster for the school’s computer lab.

He manages occupational and speech therapy sessions with the IE team and played a big role in winning a planetarium Dome for their school which allows their learners to connect globally and form a partnership between Rusthof LSEN School and the United Kingdom.
