Bridgeville Primary learner wins lockdown competition

Shiloh Alexander, a Grade 5 learner at Bridgeville Primary in Athlone, was one of the winners of the Literacy Association of South Africa’s (Litasa) lockdown competition.

Litasa’s Western Cape branch invited children aged 10 to 12 to share their stories about what it has been like to be in lockdown. There was also a category for parents to reflect on their experience of being home with their children during this time.

Shiloh impressed the judges with his explanation of the COVID-19 pandemic and a description of how he spent his time while under lockdown. 

Shiloh’s proud teacher, Kim Thompson, said the Grade 5 learners had a similar topic for their second term oral assessment and she encouraged the learners to enter the competition. “This is an awesome achievement for Shiloh and the school. I am super proud of him and glad I could have encouraged him to participate in the competition!”

The other Western Cape winners were Syed Istiaq Ahmed who submitted a video entitled ‘My Lockdown Moments’; Haleemah Ahmed of Rylands Primary wrote a poem called ‘Life in lockdown’; and Olivia van der Vliet penned a wrote a short story called ‘Existing’. 

The winners received a cash prize of R350.
