2021 Provincial Gr. 12 Business Studies Online Quiz

After the successful piloting of the online Business Studies quiz in 2020, the first inaugural Provincial Business Studies Online Quiz was held on Saturday 14 August 2021.

Grade 12 Business Studies learners from all eight districts in the Western Cape participated in the quiz. A total of 1015 learners from 107 schools competed in four elimination rounds. Learners were assessed on the Grade 12 Business Studies content covered in Terms 1 and 2. Participants had to answer 120 multiple choice questions in two hours. The top 250 learners proceeded to the final rounds.

Participants in the final rounds had to answer an additional 100 multiple choice questions in 90 minutes. The competition amongst schools was fierce and learners performed exceptionally well. Bragging rights for top performing schools went to Bloubergrant High School from Metro North District, with an average percentage of 90.%, followed by Desmond Mpilo High School from Cape Winelands District with an average percentage of 89.2% and Leiden Secondary School from Metro North District with an average percentage of 88.2%.

The top performing schools in Metro South District were Darun Na’im Girls High and Immaculata RK High School. The top performing schools in Metro Central Districts were Oaklands High School followed by Modderdam Secondary School. Top performing schools in the Metro East Education District were Jan Kriel Special School, followed by Apex High school. Top performing schools in the Overberg District were Overberg High School followed by Grabouw High School.

Top individual honours of the provincial online quiz were scooped up by Klara van Niekerk of Swellendam High School in the Overberg District and Muhaimin Khan of Bloubergrant High School in the Metro North District. Both learners obtained an average percentage of 96% in the final rounds. The first runner up positions were jointly awarded to Elzaan Gertse of Emil Weder Secondary School, MicKaylin Botha of Bloubergrant, Sipelele Sikepe of Oaklands High School, Eva Quinlan of Overberg High School and Sachin Hockey of Paul Roos Gimnasium, with an average percentage of 95%. The second runner-up positions were awarded to Melissa Stemmet of Overberg High School, Panashe Munyikwa of Bloubergrant High School, Rayganah Rinquest of Darun Na’im Girls School, Rumbidzi Hotera of Desmond Mpilo Tutu High School, Imaan Davids of Kensington High School and Tristan van Dyk of Paul Roos Gimnasium who all achieved an average percentage of 94%.

The feedback and responses of both learners and teachers were constructive and positive. Some learners alluded to the fact that the online quiz provided them with an opportunity to engage with the content in preparation for the Trial Examination, while other learners appreciated the fact that the quiz questions highlighted areas of the content that were challenging and that requires further study on their part.
