2019 Long Service Awards honour career milestones
7 November 2019
A total of 938 employees of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) received long service awards this year for 20, 30 and 40 years of public service.
Nearly 200 of these awards went to recipients with 40 years of service.
Awards were presented to 774 recipients at a gala evening on Friday, 11 October 2019 with the remainder being celebrated in George this past Friday.
Head of Education, Brian Schreuder, said the WCED wants to honour staff for the part they have played in ensuring quality education for every child, in every classroom, in every school of the province.
“In keeping with the WCED’s 2019 theme, “The Year of the Learner”, the long service awards celebrate the excellent work that teachers and public servants have done over the years in order to ensure that our most important client – the learner – is served.”
Western Cape Education Minister, Debbie Schäfer, said recipients should be proud of their contribution to the province and society – and how they have touched the lives, either directly or indirectly, of literally millions of citizens over the years.
“Your contribution is not time-bound but has an impact for years and years to come. And so it is important to acknowledge and show appreciation for your commitment and dedication to education. That is why we attach such great importance to these awards here tonight.”
The two events were organised by the Directorate: Service Benefits. It was an evening of good food, excellent entertainment by the Cape Town Youth Choir (Cape Town event) and George Suid Laerskool (George event), and happy celebration!
