Second Chance Matric Support Programme: Free Tutoring Classes

Information about the Second Chance Matric Support Programme and Second Chance Matric Support centres in the Western Cape

  1. The Second Chance Matric Support Programme (SCMSP) is offered by the Department of Basic Education to assist National Senior Certificate (NSC) and Senior Certificate (SC) part-time candidates to prepare for the May/June and October/November examinations. It is important to note that SC part-time candidates will only be allowed to write the May/June examination and cannot register to write the October/November examination.
  2. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) established Second Chance Matric Support Programme (SCMSP) centres in the Western Cape in 2025.
  3. The centres will provide support to part-time candidates who have not been able to meet the requirements of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or the amended Senior Certificate (SC).
  4. The programme will provide free tutoring to:
    1. NSC June examination: Candidates who wrote the NSC exam in previous exam sittings from 2008 to 2024 and wish to rewrite any of their subjects in order to improve their overall results.
    2. NSC November examination: Candidates who wrote the NSC exam in previous exam sittings from 2008 to 2024 and wish to rewrite any of their subjects in order to improve their overall results, as well as NSC candidates offering new subjects for which they will complete the School-Based Assessments (SBA) in 2025.
    3. SC June examination: Adult candidates who are 18 years and older, have at least a Grade 9 qualification / Adult Education and Training Level 4 qualification and who have not yet met the requirements for an SC/matric qualification or wish to improve on their previous SC results obtained.
  5. The tutoring will cover the following subjects:

    Accounting | Agricultural Science | Business Studies | Economics | English First Additional Language | Geography | History | Life Sciences | Mathematics | Mathematical Literacy | Physical Sciences

  6. Master teachers will provide face-to-face tutoring at selected venues. Candidates will also have access to Mindset Broadcast lessons via HD OpenView at specified broadcast centres.
  7. In the face-to-face classes, Mind the Gap study material will be used in eight of the 11 subjects (Agricultural Sciences, Business Studies and History excluded), in addition to past question papers and study guides.
  8. There is NO COST involved. All tuition is offered free of charge.
