Messages of support for Class of 2020
18 November 2020
Celebrities, alumni and community members of Albertinia, near Mossel Bay, have rallied behind the Class of 2020 who are busy writing their National Senior Certificate exams.
Albertinia High School posted video messages from the likes of actor, writer and director, Christo Davids, actress Monique Rockman, rugby player Leighton Eksteen, , South African Paralympic sprint runner and long jumper, Dyan Buis, and educational psychologist and the founder of The Shackbuilder, Quinton Adams, on the school’s Facebook page to motivate Grade 12 learners.
The Class of 2020 were reminded of their potential for greatness if they applied themselves and worked towards their goals. Learners were encouraged to take control of their future and that their effort will pay off when the exam results are announced next year.
Albertinia High School Principal, Dennis Karelse, said the Covid-19 pandemic took its toll on learners and they needed extra motivation for the exams. He approached several of his contacts to encourage learners and provide practical tips to assist them in the weeks leading up to the exams. “Their messages had a greater impact because the learners can relate to them as they are from the area or come from similar backgrounds. They also serve as a reminder to the learners that your circumstances do not define you and that your choices determine your future.”
Karelse said he witnessed renewed enthusiasm and a sense of purpose amongst learners. He said staff go out of their way to show learners that they care about them, either through words of encouragement, enquiring about their wellbeing or giving them small tokens of appreciation.
