A new library and classroom for Chapel Street Primary

29 September 2022

On 27 September 2022, provincial Minister of Education, David Maynier, opened the Sunbird Library, as well as a Grade R classroom and playground, at Chapel Street Primary.

The project is a collaboration between the Otto Foundation, Rotary Waterfront, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), and a number of other partners, working together to create beautiful spaces for the learners of the school.

The library in particular is a light and welcoming space, packed with new books supplied by project partners for the learners to enjoy.

Other partners contributing to the project included Biblionef SA, Clicks South Africa, The Kamvalethu Foundation, The Wilde Ganzen Foundation, and Wings of Support.

The project was a response to the WCED’s invitation to civic partners to become part of a “whole of society” effort to reach its critical goal of ensuring that all learners can read for meaning by age 10.

Minister Maynier said: “This is what TEAM READ is all about: recognising that achieving absolute literacy requires a whole of society approach, and depends on the power of partnerships.”

“I thank all the project partners for their involvement in the project, and I look forward to seeing what this partnership will achieve in the future!”
