Jakes Gerwel Fellowship online series

28 May 2020

The Jakes Gerwel Fellowship (JGF) has launched a two-week webinar series to assist Grade 12 learners with applying to university and scholarships in 2021.

The online series is titled “Learning in Interesting Times”.

The first week focusses on university applications during Covid-19 and representatives from four partner universities have been lined up to give learners insight into the application process at their institution.

Learners can join daily on Zoom, Facebook and YouTube at 16:00 for a 20 to 30 minute session.
JGF Chairperson, Jonathan Jansen kicked off the series this week with a motivational talk based on the quote by Robert Kennedy: "Every generation inherits a world it never made; and, as it does so, it automatically becomes the trustee of that world for those who come after."

Jansen encouraged learners to see the current situation in perspective and reminded them that if you take a long view, somehow things always work out. He said the challenge was to emerge from the crisis as more caring and compassionate, to be a better person and make a difference in the world.

The following speakers have been lined up for the rest of the week: Sharon Mashau, University of the Witwatersrand; Gcinumzi Haduse, University of Cape Town; Prof Kinta Burger, University of Johannesburg and Dr Pieter Clase, University of Pretoria.
