Celebrating our Long Service Award recipients

17 November 2023

The WCED celebrated more than a thousand recipients of Long Service Awards at a glittering ceremony at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on 27 October 2023.

The programme director was the actress Jolene Martin, who plays the role of principal Beatrice Cupido in the popular telenovela Arendsvlei.

Brent Walters, Head of Education, said it was a remarkable achievement of dedication and commitment to have served for the past 20, 30 and 40 years. “As public servants, we dedicate our lives to serving others. We do this through various means throughout the organisation – each contributing towards our vision for quality education for every child, in every classroom, in every school in the province.

“This year, we celebrate 1 168 colleagues who have, in some way or another, touched, helped, guided, taught, inspired and motivated many colleagues employed by the WCED, or the hundreds of learners who have come and gone through our schools.”

David Maynier, Western Cape Minister of Education, said to serve in any role for decades is an achievement, but to do so in education is a profound investment in the future of our children.

“We are fortunate to be able to rely on you, our long-serving staff members, to
share your knowledge and experience with newcomers to the Department. Your
leadership has helped see us through many challenges, and will no doubt see us through many more.

“Thank you for the work you have done for so many years, and for your service to the Department and the children of the Western Cape.”
