Artistry in review: the matric class of 2020
14 April 2021
Iziko Museums, in collaboration with the Western Cape Education Department, is showcasing the artworks of the Matric class of 2020.
The virtual showcase will feature a representation of each school in the Western Cape offering Visual Art, with the presentations divided into districts. The first showcase as part of ARTISTRY in REVIEW features Matric 2020 Visual Art learners from the Cape Winelands District, and was launched online on Wednesday, 24 March 2021.
The exhibition will run over 6 months.
Senior Iziko Art Educator, Yentl Kohler, said the exhibition aims to support and give South Africa’s young new school leavers an opportunity to showcase their art virtually.
“This showcase is also intended to be a classroom resource to be used to inspire, engage and teach. The showcase is a lovely way to share works across districts in a way that would not be possible ordinarily.”
Kohler said Grade 12 learners had to submit their portfolios in digital format due to the Covid-19 restrictions and teachers and the subject advisors chose the top five learners’ work from their school to be submitted for the showcase.
Schools participating in the Cape Winelands showcase include the Hugo Naude Art Centre, the Jack Meyer Art Centre, the PJ Olivier Art Centre, Worcester Secondary School, Noorder Paarl Secondary and the Stellenbosch Waldorf School.
ARTISTRY in REVIEW is presented on both the Iziko website and the WCED website with one district featured per month. The online showcase will feature online until August 2021.
Live showcases are scheduled as follows:
Metro Central – 29 April
Eden Karoo, Westcoast and Overberg- 27 May
Metro East- 17 June
