Leadership Academy launched to develop school leadership talent

9 May 2023

Statement by Minister David Maynier, Minister of Education Western Cape

We are excited to announce the launch of the Western Cape Education Department’s Leadership Academy!

The Leadership Academy is a unique new unit at the Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute, specifically tasked with developing leadership talent across the WCED and particularly in schools.

The Academy will offer various training and support programmes, courses, conferences and seminars to develop strong leadership within our schools.

Today we are also introducing the School Leadership and Management Programme, which will be one of the key programmes offered by the Academy and will train 88 current and future school leaders this year.

Each district office has identified two schools, preferably one primary and one high school, to participate in programme this year. Each school, in turn, nominated School Management Team members to participate, including teachers with potential and interest to be developed in school leadership.

The 16 schools nominated to participate in this year’s cohorts are:

The WCED’s Cape Teaching and Leadership has meticulously developed the course content to ensure that it is engaging, informative, innovative and inspiring.

The programme will be delivered as a hybrid model (face-to-face, online learning, and webinars). It will be supported with instructional coaches and mentors, course coordinators, facilitators, and programme drivers.

The programme seeks to develop the participants’ understanding and leadership of themselves, their teams and their schools with a sense of values and purpose.

It will equip them to lead projects and portfolios in change management and to formulate, develop and implement strategies for school improvement and learner achievement.

We will monitor the progress of the participants, look forward to seeing effective and sustainable positive change in their schools.
