Telematics – 10 Questions

1. What’s Telematics?
Telematics is the blending of information and telecommunications technologies to convey information over large networks, normally by the public and private sectors.
2. When did this programme start?
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) entered into a partnership with the University of Stellenbosch in 2009 to help learners in disadvantaged communities to use the Telematics infrastructure at the university.
3. How does it work?
Teachers broadcast lessons to selected schools via satellite and stream lessons using web-based technologies.
4. Who provides the lessons?
Experienced teachers, subject advisors and curriculum specialists present their lessons, planned by WCED subject specialists.
5. How do you ensure participation?
Learners participate in a large "cyber classroom" by posing questions in real time by email and communication apps. Presenters pose questions and receive immediate responses from learners.

Learners can download resources for the lessons from the Telematics web site,
7. What subjects are you teaching?
Telematics covers Accounting, Business Studies, Geography, History, Life Sciences, Mathematics and Physical Sciences.
8. What grades are you covering?
We started Telematics for Grade 12 revision. However, we encourage Grade 11 learners to participate by attending the lessons which will help them prepare for their final exams in the seven subjects.
