Contractors repair vandalised school

Various sectors of government are working closely to ensure that Matroosbergweg Primary School in Belhar is safe before learners return to the school.

Damaged caused by thieves last term included stealing poles that supported the roof of an external corridor. Contractors are completing repairs to the corridor and the toilets, among other repairs.

Officials from the City and Provincial Government met at the school today (13 October 2008) to view progress and will meet again tomorrow (14 October 2008) to check whether contractors have completed the repairs satisfactorily.

Learners will return to the school as soon as these officials are satisfied that the premises concerned meet safety requirements and that the repairs meet the requirements of building regulations.

Matroosbergweg learners in Grades 1 to 5 have been attending school at Dr Van der Ross Primary School, Belhar, while those in Grades 6 and 7 have been attending school at Van Riebeeckstrand Primary, Melkbosstrand, while repairs are completed.

The City and Provincial departments involved include Health, Fire, Building Management, Public Works and the Safe Schools division of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED).
