Gabru appointed MEC for Education in the Western

Premier Lynne Brown has appointed Yousuf Gabru to the provincial Cabinet as MEC for Education on the Western Cape.

MEC Gabru has been a Member of the Western Cape Parliament since 1995. He has been a member of the legislature’s Standing Committees on Education, Health and Culture. He was Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Education from 2002 to 2004.

He was appointed Deputy Speaker of the provincial Parliament in 2006, and MEC for Education on 31 July 2008.

MEC Gabru has served on the Provincial Executive the ANC since 1994.

He matriculated in Johannesburg in 1965 and obtained a General Certificate of Education in London in 1970.

He holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and a BSc (Honours) degree in Mathematics, both from the University of London, as well as a BEd from the University of Cape Town an MEd from the University of Bristol.

He taught at Salt River High and Crestway Senior Secondary schools between 1976 and 1984, as well as schools in London and Eastbourne in the United Kingdom.

He has lectured in Mathematics at the University of the Western Cape, Khanya College, Cape Town, and the Polytechnic of Central London.

Other former academic positions have included Director of the Resources Centre for Teachers, UCT, Research Fellow in Mathematics Education, UCT, and Regional Editor of Perspectives in Education.

He is a former Chairperson of the Western Cape Teachers’ Union and the Wynberg Branch of the African National Congress. He has held executive positions on the Steenberg/Retreat Housing Action Committee, the Cape Areas Housing Action Committee and Musical Action for People’s Power.

He was an Executive Member of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union and Regional Coordinator of the United Democratic Front for the Southern Suburbs.

MEC Gabru brings many years of experience in education, community work, political activism and parliamentary work to his new position as MEC for Education. His key concerns include the interests of teachers and how best the education system can support them in their work.
