Cabinet, WCED to visit schools on opening day

Statement by Cameron Dugmore, MEC for Education in the Western Cape

The Western Cape Cabinet under the leadership of Premier Ebrahim Rasool will visit several schools tomorrow across the province to welcome the 920,000 learners, including 80,000 grade 1s, back into school. He is to be accompanied by Education MEC Cameron Dugmore.

The Premier and MECs are also expected to check on the state of readiness of the schools, and at the same time either to acknowledge and congratulate high schools that have performed well in the 2007 examinations, or use the visits to encourage and motivate those that have not done so well.

Each MEC is expected to have a short meeting with the principal and senior staff for not more 15 minutes, and thereafter address a special assembly of learners (for not more than 30 minutes). A senior WCED official is to accompany each MEC.

In addition to circuit managers and curriculum officials, more than 30 members of the Western Cape Education Department's Broad Management Team have also been deployed to visit selected schools, to assess and report on their state of readiness.

* MEC Dugmore will visit the Bosmansdam High School at 08h30, where the 2007 Idols winner Jody Williams will perform for her former school. Jody will also join MEC Dugmore and Premier at the Parkhurst Primary School in Mitchell's Plain, and the Hector Petersen High Sschool in Bloekombos, Kraaifontein.
