Strike impact

The impact of the strike over rising food and electricity prices was minimal at Western Cape schools, according to data compiled by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED).

The WCED believes that about 4% of staff employed by the department, including teachers and public servants, took part in the strike.

Seven of the eight education districts of the department reported by 15h00 today that the impact of the strike was minimal. The eighth district, Overberg, submitted a partial report for two circuits with a similar finding.

While attendance by teachers and public servants averaged around 95%, the Metropole Central District reported that attendance by learners ranged between 70% and 75%.

The Metropole East District reported that two schools were affected significantly by the strike. No schools were reported to have closed.
