Employment equity stats: Western Cape ex-model C schools made most progress

Statement by Cameron Dugmore, MEC for Education in the Western Cape

So called ex-model C schools have statistically made the most progress towards employment equity, revealed Western Cape Education MEC Cameron Dugmore in the Provincial Legislature today, in reply to a question posed by a member of the legislature.

MEC Dugmore said so called-ex model C schools constitute 20% of the total number of schools in the Western Cape, and white educators employed at these schools represent about nine per cent (9%) of the total educators employed in the province.

He said the Western Cape Education Department's (WCED) Employment Equity policy and plan aim to ensure a staff compliment at all institutions and offices that reflect the demographics of the population of the Western Cape.

Often the language of instruction and the language in which educators are competent to deliver the curriculum in, play a major role in the integration of especially African educators to ex-Model C schools where the language of instruction is predominantly Afrikaans, said MEC Dugmore.

The WCED also conducts training for School Governing Bodies (SGBs), which include sections on Employment Equity and Affirmative Action. The WCED further interacted with SGB associations in a consultative process and has embarked on advocacy campaigns to promote Employment Equity, said MEC Dugmore.

He also replied to questions on the government's family literacy programme, infrastructure and maintenance costs, and a canceled safe schools Imbizo.
