Increased support measures to improve maths and science performances

Statement by Cameron Dugmore, MEC for Education in the Western Cape

In order to stem the decline in the performances of maths and science, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has introduced intensive support measures for grades 11 and 12, and will step up its literacy and numeracy strategy in primary schools.

These were some of the announcements made by Western Cape Education MEC Cameron Dugmore when he addressed a gathering of learners, teachers and science organisations at the launch of the National Science Week in Constantia, Cape Town today (Friday 09 May).

National Science Week is an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology and aims to take young people into the exciting world of science, and to encourage them to develop an active interest in studying mathematics and other science-related subjects. Government wants to attract more young people into science, engineering and technology careers.

MEC Dugmore said Science and Technology forms the backbone of any modern economy. "It is key to the development and progress of a country. Much of the developments in the medical, engineering, construction and information spheres can be attributed to the scientists and researchers who have spent their lives combing through the laws of nature for solutions to scientific problems.

"These solutions have often led to discoveries that made our lives easier and more bearable. One thinks of inventions like vaccinations for the eradication of polio, the discovery of the micro-chip, which led to the massive industry called the internet."

MEC Dugmore said that whilst some interventions and strategies in the education system have shown some encouraging signs, and whilst it is a positive development that more learners are taking up maths and science, the WCED is nevertheless concerned with the slight decline in the number of passes in the last three years.

That is why the department will provide intensive support in 2008, through:

  • winter and spring schools for grades 11 and 12;
  • wider participation in maths and science olympiads;
  • increased support to teachers; and
  • a continuation of programmes and workshops to improve subject knowledge and teaching methodologies of teachers.
