Saturday schools to offer second chance for matrics

Statement by Cameron Dugmore, MEC for Education in the Western Cape

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is organising special Saturday schools for candidates who failed the 2007 Senior Certificate Examinations. The candidates will be able to write supplementary examinations in May and June this year.

The tutorial programme forms part of a national initiative to support candidates who failed matric in 2007. The national Department of Education will invest more than R6-million in the programme in the Western Cape.

Candidates who registered and sat for Cape Senior Certificate examinations before 2008 will be able to write Senior Certificate examinations based on the old curriculum until 2011.

Candidates registering for matric for the first time in 2008 will have to write National Senior Certificate examinations based on the new national curriculum.

The support programme will take place at 30 schools throughout the Western Cape from 2 February to 17 May 2008. The programme will include three sessions on Saturday mornings, each lasting 90 minutes, amounting to a total of 15 tutorial sessions.

The WCED has invited experienced tutors to apply to teach the Saturday classes and is already processing applications for these positions.

Candidates who qualify for writing supplementary examinations must register before 31 January 2008.

Those wishing to participate in the Saturday tutorial programme must register at one of the 30 venues on Saturday, 26 January 2008, for a maximum of three subjects. The venues are:

* Metro Central District: Rhodes , Belgravia, Isilimela and Oude Molen High Schools

* Metro East District: Malibu, Kleinvlei, Luhlaza, Zola and Bernadino Heights High Schools

* Metro North District: Atlantis, Parow, Roosendal and Elsies River High Schools

* Metro South District: Fezeka, Zwaanswyk, Portlands and Spine Road High Schools

* Overberg District: Ceres Secondary, Bredasdorp High Shools

* Eden & Karoo District: Bastiaanse Secondary, Outeniqua High, Knysna Secondary and Morester Secondary Schools

* Cape Winelands District: Langeberg, Noorder Paarl, and Worcester Secondary Schools

* West Coast District: Schoonspruit, Steynville, Weston and Vredendal Secondary Schools

The programme will cover the following subjects:

  • Accounting Higher Grade (HG) and Standard Grade (SG)
  • Afrikaans 1st and 2nd Language
  • Agricultural Science SG
  • Biblical Studies HG and SG
  • Biology HG and SG
  • Business Economics HG and SG
  • Computer Studies HG and SG
  • Computyping
  • Economics HG and SG
  • English 1st & 2nd Language
  • Geography HG and SG
  • History HG and SG
  • isiXhosa 1st Language
  • Physical Science HG and SG
  • Travel and Tourism
  • Mathematics HG and SG

Candidates who have applied to write supplementary examinations and those participating in the tutorial programme will write the same papers in May and June this year.

Candidates who fail again in May and June can continue studying at Adult Education Centres.
