All teachers who qualified for salary progression payments in the Western Cape received the payments in 2006, in line with national policy.

In response to questions from the Sunday Times, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) confirmed that the department had made the payments to 23 951 teachers in the province, from funds provided by the national Department of Education.

The budget for the payments for the 2006/07 financial years in the Western Cape was R31,165-million, of which R19,589-million was allocated to performance rewards.
