Work starts on new Mfuleni primary school

Contractors have started work on a new primary school for learners currently attending an informal school on a field in Zone 6, Mfuleni.

The contractors are currently erecting 25 mobile classrooms on the site, which will provide accommodation for more than 800 learners.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) will not recognise the informal school, but will create a new school for the learners concerned once the mobile classrooms are in place.

The community has accepted a WCED proposal to transport learners to other schools for the rest of this term until contractors have complete the classrooms. The new school is expected to open on the first day of the second term.

The WCED will call the new school Mfuleni Number 3 Primary School until the parent body has decided on a name. Once the learners are registered, the department will appoint an interim school governing body pending the election of a new governing body.

Senior WCED officials and a representative of the Department of Transport and Public Works will meet with representatives of the local community on a regular basis until further notice to discuss progress on the project.

Meanwhile, Public Works has appointed a contractor to start work on a new, permanent school, to be called, initially, Mfuleni Number 4. Work on this school is expected to start later this month. Contractors expect to finish the first phase of the project by August.
