According to eyewitnesses, the fire at the Klein Preuss Primary School, which is about 4,8km outside of Ceres, started at about 04h00 on Sunday morning. Fire and rescue personnel could only put the last flames out four hours later. The only items people at the scene were able to rescue, were a piano, coputer and printer, fax machine, 33 chairs and a few chairs and tables. The rest of the items, which includes learner materials, the school's administrative records, documents and furniture were destroyed. Fortunately no one was injured. It is not yet clear what started the fire, but the police are investigating. The MEC will meet with department officials to discuss how to manage the issue of learners and teachers, who will have to be accommodated in nearby schools. return to: Home | Media Releases Index page | |
