W Cape prepares learning celebration Statement by the Western Cape MEC for Education, Cameron Dugmore There’s no doubt that studying gets you places – where would Harry Potter be if it weren’t for Hermione’s hours spent riveted by just the right book! That’s the thing about studying – when it’s relevant, and fits clearly into your big picture, you can get through the dreary bits because the rest is your vehicle to network, discover your passion and change your life. Between 12 August and 10 September, the Western Cape will be buzzing with brain cells (and people) as schools, colleges, workplace mentors, universities, museums, NGOs and government departments host workshops, events, demos and debates focussed on learning. The aim is to create a ‘learning province’ by building partnerships between business, educators and trainers, labour, civil society and government to be responsive in developing solutions around learning, job creation and skills training. If you’re in a rut and need to be inspired by learning something new, or want to inspire others around you to learn, make a commitment to take that class -- or organise a learning event in your community! Watch the press for details of the Learning Fair between 2-4 September – a ‘market’ for educators, skills development practitioners, trainers and facilitators at the Oliver Tambo Centre in Khayelitsha; and for other events happening throughout the province.
